Sheriff Vic Regalado says he's planning more changes for the jail, a focal point for lawsuits against the county for both injuries and deaths that occurred during the past administration.

Democratic Candidate Rex Berry says change isn't coming fast enough.

"It's in irrational to believe we can expand our jail while the TSO employs the same methods and not expect deaths, injuries, lawsuits and property taxes to increase," said Berry.

The sheriff and the county have the medical unit at the jail under extra scrutiny because of rising costs and claims of poor care, especially for mental health issues.

Sheriff Regalado wants medical providers to come up with proposals for better care with controls on the cost.

“There's a lot of parts of the jail I've been looking into,” said Regalado. “Medical is one of them of course, and that's one of the reasons we went out to a request for proposals and that's to see what's out there to make sure we're getting proper serve that the inmate deserve and the sheriff office needs and making sure we get what we pay for.”

Berry says if he's elected in November, he would have a committee of citizens advise him on the medical needs of the jail.

"I want them to come in and tell me what we need, and from that, we will be devising a contract,” said Berry.
