Cyclists Recovering After Kiefer Crash With Alleged DUI Driver

Two bicyclist are doctoring a series of broken bones and scraps after police say a suspected drunk driver rammed into them Wednesday.

Family members say recovery could take six months or more. Paul Clayton has a long way to go before he's healed.

"It's a roller coaster of emotions," said his daughter Darci Clayton.

But she says doctors’ prayer and love from his family will eventually get him there.

"We know it's going to be a long process, at least 6 months, but we're just thankful that he's alive," she stated.

Paul and his friend Dave Crowell don't ride their bikes often, but when they do it's often together.

Wednesday the two were riding their bikes on Main Street near one of the Kiefer fire departments when police say drunk driving suspect Daniel McCall rammed into them.

The impact sent one man flying more than 140 feet through the air. The other man got caught on the windshield of the suspect’s vehicle.

The hospital released Crowell Saturday. He's doctoring two broken vertebrae, a broken leg and rib.

Paul's injuries are even more severe.

"He has nine broken ribs, collapsed lung on the left side, a broken scapula and clavicle and a chipped humorous," said Darci. "And then he has a collapsed eye socket, his nose is broken, 14 stables in his head, eight staples in his leg."

As both men recover, McCall faces charges for DUI with injury. Police say this accident shows why it's important to share the road.

"Regardless of what your opinion on bicycles on the road way, if they should be in a certain place or not, they have a right to be on the road," said Kiefer Police Chief Johnny Omara.

Darci says it's been tough watching her father suffer, but his continued strength gives her hope. 

Family members created the Facebook page “Paul’s Prayers” to let people keep up with how the victims are doing.

There also is a GoFundMe page set up for the two men.
