The remains of an Oklahoma Marine killed during World War II in the South Pacific will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday.

Marine Private Robert Carter, 19, of Oklahoma City was identified by the Department of Defense and returned to his family for burial.

In November 1943, Carter was assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, which landed on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency says Carter was among 1,000 Marines and Sailors killed during a battle on the island.

His remains were recovered in June 2015 at a burial site on the island.
