Along Highway 88, just south of Claremore, you’ll see a fireworks stand on the side of the road; but who it’s run by might turn some heads.
"We're the best people to buy from," said firefighter Joel Smith.
The stand is being run by the Tiawah Fire Department. They’re selling the fireworks as a way to raise money.
Chief Johnny Golbek said, “If you're going to buy fireworks anyway, you're going to shoot fireworks anyway, you might as well help the guys that are going to be out there helping you when you mess up."
When the department needs funds to buy equipment they rely on grants, subscriptions from homeowners and fundraisers. And all the money raised from the fireworks sales will go to new gear for the firefighters.
"Without these fundraisers, we couldn't provide that for our men to do their jobs," Golbek said.
The department has to raise the money because they don't get any from taxes.
Golbek said, “We’re just out here trying to do a good thing - raise money for a good cause. We want to put the money right back into our personnel, who's going to be out there helping whenever the call comes in."
You can support the Tiawah Fire Department's fireworks stand this weekend. They'll be set up at the corner of Flint Road and Highway 88 in Rogers County.
