A Tulsa firefighter is recovering after falling through a floor while fighting an overnight house fire.
Tulsa firefighters say the overnight fire started on the home's porch at 12th and Indian.
The fire department said they had to send a rescue unit to save one of the firefighters when he stepped through the floor, falling into the basement.
"It's a team of guys solely dedicated for the purpose of saving a firefighter should they get trapped or get lost in a fire like this," Captain Mike Burgess said.
Burgess said the firefighter was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
The captain said the firefighter was a rookie and that wearing his fire gear may have protected him during the fall.
"I mean, it's bulky and it provides the padding. I mean, if you’re just in regular clothes and were to fall onto something," Burgess said.
He said a firefighter’s oxygen unit can be the difference between life and death.
"We all wear our breathing packs all the time, so had he fallen into a place where there's more fire or more smoke, at least he's got a patent airway," Burgess said.
The Tulsa Fire Department said it will continue to investigate what caused this fire.
TFD said a dog died in the fire but no one else was home at the time.
