News On 6 has new video of a former Tulsa County reserve deputy pointing a Taser at a suspect who is naked and on the ground.
On Wednesday, along with our partner The Frontier, we showed you another angle of the incident involving Reserve Deputy Bob Bates, just days before he shot and killed Eric Harris.
TCSO Reserve Deputy Shooting Controversy
After our exclusive report, the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office asked to speak with News On 6; then, after we got this new video, the office abruptly canceled our meeting after consulting attorneys.
The new video is deputy eye-view footage from a search warrant served by the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office Violet Crimes Task Force on March 12, 2015.
It shows Bates pointing a Taser at a suspect as he's on the ground, naked.
As Bates points the Taser you see a flash of light. Then you hear:
Suspect: "What did I do?"
Bates: "Everything."
The new video clearly shows Bates pointing his Taser at the suspect and sheriff's office policy says "pointing a lethal or less-lethal weapon" at a suspect is use of force.
But a statement from the sheriff's office says, "There was no use of force shown" in either video.
This incident happened March 12, 2015; days before Bates shot and killed suspect Eric Harris.
His brother, Andre said, “I'm so thankful that he didn't kill that gentleman."
His attorney, Dan Smolen said, "Everything about those two scenes are almost identical. You had a minority that was in custody, that was detained at that point, there was no threat."
Right now, the sheriff's office is standing by its statement that it’s not use of force.
Our partner, The Frontier, has more on this story on it's website.
