A Broken Arrow boy told his parents he didn’t want presents for his birthday, and instead, is celebrating by giving gifts to others.
When 6-year-old Asher isn't playing Legos with his dad and little brother, he’s likely hanging out in his ‘Superhero Hideout.’
Asher loves superheroes; and when his birthday rolled around last weekend, he thought hard about who should really be getting gifts.
He decided the Broken Arrow police officers are kind of like superheroes for the city, so he started a fundraiser for them. Instead of presents, he asked for donations.
"I just wanted to donate, and God put this into my heart," Asher said.
Asher's mom, Jenny, said this is just her son's nature - he's always been this way.
"You know, I just think he was born with a really kind heart," she said.
Asher's GoFundMe page raised more than $1,200, which the police department will use to buy safety whistles for the community.
"They said they're used for the elderly and kids, if they can't scream," Asher said.
Jenny said, "It kind of took off and he met his first goal, he met his second goal, and now he's got a lot of whistles to donate."
Asher said he has no regrets.
Annie: "Do you feel like you made the right decision by not getting any presents?"
Asher: "Yes."
In fact, he plans to forgo birthday gifts every year because that's probably what a superhero would do.
Asher said he hopes to deliver the whistles sometime next week.
