State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister joined Rich Lenz on Six in the Morning to discuss education issues.

Hofmeister discussed the state legislator's consideration of pay raises for teachers. They'd take the money out of the pot currently being used for teacher health care.

That bill has currently been held back as the author continues to work on it, Hofmeister said.

"It is absolutely a priority to have an effective teacher in every classroom, and solving the teacher shortage has to be a top priority," Hofmeister said.

Many people also think Oklahoma has too many school districts for its student population.  There are over 500 in the state.

Hofmeister said she absolutely agrees there are too many districts, but how districts are merged is going to be a very delicate process that involves those affected.
