Oklahoma Couple Celebrates Super Bowl 1 Love Story, Wedding

Sunday was Super Bowl 50, but for one couple it was a day to celebrate something that happened on the day of Super Bowl 1.

January 15th, 1967 was the day Jim and Sherry Knight got married.

"He had the most gorgeous smile...his face just lit up...then I looked into his eyes and I felt I had known him my entire life," Sherry said.

Jim said he knew in 30 seconds, she was the one. It’s one of those classic love stories. He asked her to marry, she said yes.

"She was a senior in college; I was a second lieutenant at Fort Hood Texas," Jim said.

So they looked for a wedding date around school and the Army and decided on January 15th, 1967, also the date of the first Super Bowl - Green Bay and the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Super Bowl wasn't important then,” Jim said.

He thinks the game started around 1:00 p.m. The wedding was later in the afternoon, so all the men watched the first half at the hotel then went to the church.

They thought they'd check the score when the service was over, but it went long and they never did.

Jim finally watched the second half last week, "49 years it took me to watch the second half of Super Bowl 1."

But this, after all, is not a football story - it's a love story.

For Jim and Sherry Knight, it was love at first site then, and still is.

Jim said, "We picked each other out. I wanted to be with her, and she wanted to be with me."

Since then, like a Super Bowl, it's all about the numbers, “Four children - three girls and a boy; four grandchildren - three girls and a boy…and one great grandson."

Oh and 49 years and 50 Super Bowls.

Jim said he missed Super Bowl 3 while in Vietnam, but hasn't missed one since. They watch them together.
