Tulsa police have a man in custody following a house fire Sunday morning. Cole Day was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.
The fire started in a back bedroom of the a home near East 31st Street and South 87th East Avenue. Firefighters said flames were shooting from the home when they arrived.
They worked to get the fire under control as flames spread to the attic.
"It sounded like someone shooting a gun in the backyard, so I looked out the blinds there was fire coming out the window there and glass was popping the windows, I guess," neighbor Jerry Hollomon said.
Hollomon said his wife ran over and started beating on the door of the burning home and the homeowner's grandson, Day, came outside. Neighbors said the grandfather wasn't home because he's in the hospital.
"It's just a sad thing, you know?" Hollomon said.
Day made it out of the house but told firefighters the family Yorkie might still be inside. The little dog was found in the backyard, chewing on a bone, however.
The fire marshal reportedly found the drugs in the home while investigating the cause of the fire and asked officers to test it. Authorities haven't said if the two are connected.
As the 21-year-old man was arrested, police say they also found drugs on his person.
"There was a spoon and a glass pipe and cotton, things that are associated with methamphetamine," TPD Officer Mike Miller said. "The cotton we tested was soaked with methamphetamine had a presumptive positive test for that. Of course we found a larger amount on his person once we arrested him."
