Black cats, like Turtle, tend to spend more time in the cages at the Tulsa animal welfare shelter. It’s not because he isn't friendly enough; it's because his fur is black.
"They do get passed over in kennels ‘cause they are hard to see, and there is the superstition about black cats and people don't want a black animal because they think it's bad luck," explained the shelter’s Field Services Supervisor Susan Stoker.
Stoker says that's why they are putting a twist on Black Friday shopping. For this Black Friday, animals with any black are discounted.
That goes for the animals that are all black and the ones with only a little bit of black.
The cats are $10.00 and the dogs are $50.00.
"[People can] add to their family and add some love to their holidays," said Stoker.
There are over 200 pets inside the shelter and the number keeps growing. Stoker says crews are constantly bringing in new pets, people are dropping off pets, and some have recently delivered new litters.
Even if this isn't the time to buy your next furry family member, Stoker says whenever you chose to adopt there will be a pet for you.
"We always have a ton of animals looking for new families," she added.
There’s good news for Turtle, the cat mentioned at the beginning of the story; he's been adopted. His family will pick him up after he's been neutered. All of the animals adopted are spayed or neutered.
The Black Friday sale will continue Saturday from noon to 4:00 p.m.
