Broken Arrow loses $700 million in retail sales each year to other cities. That number is a result of research done by the city and sparked a "shop local" campaign.
When you think of Black Friday, you think big box retailers, not your mom-and-pop shops; but small stores in Broken Arrow are competing, and it's for a cause.
"This is our big season. This is our big push," said Broken Arrow business owner, Brandy Ford.
Ford picked Broken Arrow's Rose District when she decided to open her boutique, Primitive, one year ago, and has developed a close relationship with her customers.
"They get a personalized feel. I know their names when they come in the door," she said.
Ford's relying on those customers to shop their Christmas lists locally.
And new City Manager Michael Spurgeon said Broken Arrow will continue to grow if the city increases its sales tax revenue.
"You should be able to get just about everything on your Christmas list this year from one of these great businesses that exist here," he said.
Downtown stores and restaurants have already committed to staying open later, and a dozen retailers said they're participating in Black Friday and Small Business Saturday - offering all kinds of discounts.
Ford said, "Most people think that shopping small business is going to cost them more money, but, in the grand scheme of things, we've been able to get products at such a low price, as well, that we're competitive."
The new city manager is making "shop local" his priority.
If you are shopping on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday, the Rose District has a list of participating businesses online.
