Construction Begins On Muskogee's New MLK Community Center

Construction crews have the walls up on the new Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Muskogee. The state's only MLK Center holds after-school and summer programming for children.

The new 19,000-square foot building will have five classrooms, an eating area and community rooms.

Director Derrick Reed says it's going to be tough to see the old building torn down, but he says the new building is needed for the center to serve the community.

“They look out the window every day and they see, you know, this is coming up,” he said. “You know we've overfilled this building right here, and just to see that we're going to have a bigger building for generations to come, and we'll be able to reach out to more kids."

Local grants and capital improvement funds helped build the $4.5 million facility.

It's expected to open next Spring.
