The Cowboys feel confident that they'll have a more consistent, more explosive rushing attack, thanks to a couple of newcomers.
JUCO transfer Chris Carson will start against Central Michigan, veteran Rennie Childs will get the ball, and true freshman Jeff Carr, all of 5'7", 168 lbs, will also get touches. "I don't think that we're wanting one to get 25 and the other to get ten, so you would love for those guys to get 15 and then Carr to carry it eight or ten times if it works out for him so we can keep those guys fresh," said OSU Head Coach Mike Gundy.
Offensive Coordinator Mike Yurcich says the team has established good depth. “Each one of those guys is a little different so it gives you a little bit of versatility at the same time which is important as well,” he explained.
A good offensive line can be a running back’s best friend. And OSU should be improved up front. "To have those same guys in there from spring to now and to get all those reps, starting with spring, and the workouts in the summer, those guys have been great," said quarterback Mason Rudolph.
Last season the Cowboys averaged 3.5 yards per carry. That's about a yard less than Gundy feels his team needs to be successful.
Look for that number to go back up, starting next Thursday.
