Tahlequah police and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are at the scene of a fatal officer-involved shooting Saturday in the area of Fox and South Mission.
Police were called to a fight in progress taking place between two men in the 500 block of South Mission Street around 11:40 a.m.
Four officers responded to the scene and found a stolen Dodge pickup and at least one man armed with a gun, according to the OSBI. Authorities said when they arrived to the scene both men ran away.
One man reportedly went inside a home and hid in the attic. Authorities said when he came out, he started shooting at one of the officers. The officer fired back at the man, who was taken to the hospital and died a short time later.
Police said with shots being fired in a residential area, they are thankful no one else was hurt.
“Of course at any time when there are fights with weapons or weapons discharged in a municipality within the city limits, collateral neighbors and people in the neighborhood are somewhat at danger, and it's something that has to be taken into consideration before acting as a police officer at times,” Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King said.
The other man who wasn't involved in the shooting has been identified as Benjamin Brown. Brown was arrested on outstanding warrants.
Police still are working to identify the man killed.
The officer involved in the shooting has not been identified yet, but he has been placed on routine leave during the investigation
