A Muldrow high school student injured in an ATV crash in September 2013 was honored at the Sequoyah County school's spring commencement ceremony Friday.

A chair was left empty for Christian Mayberry.  Speakers honored Christian and watched a video from Christian congratulating them about finishing high school.

Christian's mom, Kim Mayberry told KFSM, the CBS affiliate in Fort Smith, he really was depressed about not being at the ceremony.

“He wanted to be there. It made him really sad to think about his classmates going through graduation without him. So, I got to thinking, and decided Christian was going to graduate anyway. He will receive that diploma. We will turn what could've been a very sad night for him into a happy milestone he can remember for years to come. It means the world to him that he's still able to graduate with his classmates tonight. He can't wait to celebrate,” said Kim Mayberry.

The school sent a cap and gown as well as an honorary diploma to Christian Mayberry, who now resides in Florida.
