One person was killed overnight in an officer-involved shooting near Miami.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, officers worked a DUI checkpoint near Miami when, they said, just before midnight Gary Timmie Collins was asked to pull on to the shoulder and instead led OHP on a short six-block chase.
Collins got out of the vehicle with a pistol in his hand, according to OHP Capt. Paul Timmons said. When the trooper noticed the gun, he feared for his safety and fired his weapon at Collins, OHP said.Investigators said they have not pinpointed why Collins took off from the checkpoint, so they still are searching for answers as well as reviewing dash cam footage from the patrol unit.
It is expected the trooper will be placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation continues.
This is a developing story and crews said they are investigating. News On 6 will update this story as information becomes available.
