Oologah 6-Year-Old Laid To Rest Following Undetermined Death

Nearly a week after her death, a 6-year-old Oologah student has been laid to rest.

The state health department is waiting on results so it can declare an official cause of death for Jenny Yang, who died on Monday, hours after being sent home from school with a fever.

On Sunday, the little girl is being remembered after her life was cut short. Hundreds of mourners poured into an East Tulsa event center to remember Yang.

"She [was] an active little sweet little girl... make everyone have fun," uncle David Yang said.

The Hmong family is struggling to understand why little Jenny died, but their heritage is helping them cope.

“In our culture, even though we lost somebody... we still make somebody happy... we don't want them to be sorry," funeral coordinator Chia Vang said.

Jenny's funeral started early Sunday morning and visitation lasted all day with her mom close by her side.

"I want everybody to remember her... joyful little girl," David Yang said.

Oologah school officials canceled classes Thursday and Friday after the superintendent says the health department provided contradictory information.

Health department workers are monitoring the Yang family and don't believe there is any public health danger for classmates even though Yang's diagnosis is undetermined.

As an extra precaution, Oologah hired a cleaning crew to go through the classrooms and school buses.

“We need answers," cousin Sam Yang said.

Family members just want to know what happened to their little girl.

“We would like to find closure... when we put her to rest...what went wrong," Sam Yang said.

The Yang family has an online donation account setup to pay for funeral costs, and on Sunday, donors exceeded the funding goal donating more than $8,000.

School is expected to resume in Oologah on Monday.
