It's still a bit early for details, but Green Country residents will want to stay weather alert with the possibility of a winter storm system later this week.

Arctic air is funneling into Oklahoma with brisk conditions. Wind chill values may dip into the single digits Tuesday night.

That cold air mass will start to warm New Year's Day, but likely not fast enough to avoid wintry precipitation as a strong storm system moves into the area.

The first wave may arrive during the day Thursday with the chance of light sleet or freezing rain (rain that falls in liquid form, but freezes on contact). While amounts appear very light at this time and temperatures may hover right at freezing, roadways could become slick in spots that evening into early Friday.

The threat for wintry weather diminishes Friday with temperatures gradually warming above freezing area-wide. Wet weather is still likely that day.

The final piece of energy with this system will pass through the region on Saturday and give Green Country a shot at seeing showers, possibly mixed with snow. Depending on the storm system's overall track, there could be some accumulation in our northern viewing area.

There are still many details that aren't certain with this storm system so there's no guarantee that ice will be a travel problem on New Year's Day.

However, the threat is there and could lead to a window of hazardous driving conditions at the end of the week for parts of our region.
