Shots Fired At Tulsa Police; Suspects Lead Officers On Chase

Police arrested two men after a pursuit through north Tulsa on Sunday night.

Tulsa police said it all started about 9 p.m. near Pine and Sheridan when an officer initiated a traffic stop because of an expired tag.

TPD Capt. Dave Roberts said the vehicle slowed, and a passenger got out of the car, rolled down and embankment, then shots were fired.

Officers were able to take the passenger into custody, but the driver took off and police picked up the chase again.

According to Roberts, an off-duty officer working a part-time job joined in on the chase, which ended at King and Peoria when the vehicle crashed in a field near an industrial area.

The driver ran but police finally arrested him after a struggle.

“It's something that we have to deal with every day,” Roberts said. “It's a very minor traffic violation, but we never know what that driver is thinking, never know if it is just another citizen or whether it's someone who's committed a felony and is determined not to go to jail.”

TPD recovered guns at the initial car stop. They took both suspects to jail. No officers were hurt, but the second suspect had minor injuries when he was tackled and taken into custody, TPD said.

According to Roberts, none of the officers fired shots. He praised the officers who were part of the second arrest.

The officers showed “an admirable level of restraint at the second scene,” he said. “Shot was fired at officers at the start of this thing, at one point, [the suspect] threatened to kill the officer that was chasing him, and kept reaching for his waistband. The officer never saw a clear threat so he never fired. He didn't have to resort to deadly force.”
