Two Oklahoma Turnpike Travel Plazas To Open Before Christmas

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority says two travel plazas will be opening this month. The largest is the multimillion-dollar renovated Archway over the Will Rogers Turnpike in Vinita.

It is scheduled to open at 4 p.m. December 22. The new Will Rogers Archway has a McDonald's, Subway and gas station. In November, OTA estimated that renovations would cost about $15 million.

“The archway is a unique landmark on Will Rogers Turnpike by the fact that it is positioned over the highway,” OTA executive director Tim Stewart said.

“We know it's significance and we believe, thanks to its renovation, it will continue to be an iconic attraction in the future.”

The section of the turnpike sees about 26,000 motorists a day, according to OTA.

Another travel plaza, this one along the Indian Nations Turnpike in McAlester, will open December 18.

It will offer fuel including CNG, a convenience store and McDonald's restaurant - and employs around 50 workers.

“The average daily traffic on this section of the Indian Nation Turnpike is approximately 9,000 vehicles per day,” Stewart said.

“Due to the large number of motorists in the McAlester area, we know this travel plaza means improved convenience, usability and safety for our customers.”

OTA plans a ribbon cutting at the McAlester plaza at 10 a.m. December 19.
