Celebrity Plane Crashes Draw Special Scrutiny From NTSB, Report Says

Plane crashes involving celebrities or people politically connected get special attention from federal investigators.

That's the conclusion of a new USA Today report. It cites the fatal crash of Tulsa physician Perry Inhofe's plane last year as a prime example.

Dr. Inhofe was the 51-year-old son of U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe. His small turbo-prop went down on approach to Tulsa International Airport.

USA Today says at least seven NTSB investigators, three FAA inspectors and four manufacturing companies were enlisted to study the crash. The paper's analysis shows the typical investigation of a private plane crash involves a total of four to five experts.

The NTSB says a larger team is called in for crashes of prominent people because of increased public interest.

At least 56 people were involved in investigating the crash that killed John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and sister-in-law.
