The Oklahoma Election Board is expected to announce its decision Wednesday on whether a special election will be held in the state's 2nd Congressional district after the Democratic nominee died two days before the general election.
The three-member board is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. to certify last week's election results. But the board first plans to meet behind closed doors with its attorney to discuss the 2nd District race.
First-term incumbent Republican Congressman Markwayne Mullin won the November 4, 2014 election with 70 percent of the vote. The Democratic nominee Earl Everett died two days before the election.
The Oklahoma Democratic Party says the law is clear that the governor should call a special election while Republican officials say it would be a waste of time.
State Democrats selected state Senator Jerry Ellis of Valliant as the substitute candidate.
