The Democratic candidate for the District 2 congressional seat died following a traffic collision. Earl Everett, 81, was in a serious wreck on Highway 62 at about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Police say he was northbound on Scott Street and was hit by a westbound vehicle as he crossed the highway.

Fort Gibson Police confirm that Everett passed away sometime Sunday night as a result of his injuries.

The Oklahoma Democratic Party issued the following statement:

“The passing of Earl Everett is tragic and unexpected. We honor the memory of Mr. Everett, a Korean War Veteran, and his desire to represent the people of Eastern Oklahoma. Anyone that is willing to put their name on a ballot in order to be voted on by their peers as a public servant deserve our admiration and respect. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Everett's name will still appear on the ballot. He was running against Republican Markwayne Mullin and Independent candidate Jon Douthitt.

In a statement Markwayne Mullin said, "My family and our entire team extend our deepest condolences to the family of Earl Everett. We pray for God's grace and comfort for them during this time and in the coming weeks."
