Study: How Social Media Posts Could Hurt Your Job Chances

A new survey by Jobvite shows more than half of employers reconsidered a potential employee based on what was on their social media account.

A new survey shows watching what you post on Facebook, Twitter or any social media is more important than ever.

It seems you can do just about anything online - order a pizza, learn a language or buy a plane ticket.

But a survey by Jobvite shows more than half of employers reconsidered a potential employee based on what was on their social media account. That's up 42 percent from a year ago.

The four top things that could cost you a job, according to the survey:

  • Illegal drug references
  • Sexual references 
  • Spelling and grammar mistakes
  • Profanity 

Three of the objectionable items seem obvious, but I wondered - why spelling and grammar?

An executive at the survey company says some employers believe spelling and grammar errors are indicators of a potential employee's communication skills and attention to detail.
