The Tulsa women's soccer team posted a 2-1 win over SMU on Thursday night at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas. TU moved to 10-7-2 on the season and 3-4-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Mustangs fell to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in the league.
“I thought we really played well,” coach Kyle Cussen said. “Every game has some lulls to it, but I thought we stayed in the game the whole time. I felt like we controlled the game, kept possession and kept attacking, and I thought it all was set up through the way we played defensively. We stayed very organized. I am proud of the effort and the energy we brought to tonight's game.”
Christina Holmes recorded her seventh goal of the season to put the Golden Hurricane on the board at the 37:50 mark off a combination from Lauren King and Sierra Krenik. In the 42nd minute Claire Maris gave Tulsa a two-goal cushion as she drilled the ball into the back of the net off a free ball that was placed into the box on a corner kick.
Olivia Elliott got one back for SMU in the 84th minute as she headed in the ball from six yards out.
Rachel Thun had a team-best four shots, Nikki Pokipala had two attempts, and Tana Dake, King, Maris and Holmes each had one shot. Courtney McKeon logged 80:24 between the posts and picked up one save, while Marleigh Essler finished the contest without a save.
Both teams had 10 shots, but TU had a 5-2 lead in shots on goal and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Tulsa will conclude the regular season on Sunday against Houston. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Houston, Texas.
