He was supposed to be putting fires out but instead, a volunteer firefighter is in the Craig County jail accused of setting them.

Deputies arrested 19-year-old Jesse Bennett Monday morning on eight counts of third degree arson.

He's recently joined the Big Cabin Fire Department as a volunteer.

Investigators from Craig County and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture worked on the case. They said Bennett is suspected of setting a string of hay bale fires in the Adair and Big Cabin areas.

The biggest fire destroyed 166 bales of hay, worth more than $6,000.

In two of those cases, the flames spread from hay to an abandoned house and a mobile home used for storage about 50 feet from an occupied home.

Bennett faces up to ten years in prison if he's convicted.
