AmeriCorps Program Swears In New Tulsa-Area Representatives

There were 50 members of the group "City Year" being sworn into service in Tulsa on Friday morning.

City Year is an AmeriCorps program which helps improve student attendance, behavior and studies.

"I think a student's outcome shouldn't be determined by their zip code; it shouldn't be determined by their parents' economic status,” City Year's Justin Porter said. “It should be determined by their willingness to attack the material and by their willingness to learn."

The students here will serve in six local public schools.

City Year is doing something similar in 25 communities nationwide.
