Tahlequah Teen Killed In Head-On Crash In Wagoner County

A 19-year-old Tahlequah man died and five other people were injured in a head-on crash on Highway 51 in Wagoner County late Thursday according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash just before 10 p.m. happened when 2001 Pontiac headed east in the westbound lanes struck a 2010 Dodge van headed west at the crest of a hill near the Verdigris River bridge. 

The OHP says the driver of the car, Joey Hensley, 20, of Tahlequah was flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition. His passenger, Jerry Winburn was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Four people in the van were also flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital. Troopers said the driver, Charles Morris, 27, of Coweta was transported in critical condition. As was two of the three passengers, Kirstin Morris, 23, and a 17-year-old female both from Coweta. The third passenger, a 5-year-old Coweta boy was transported in stable condition. 

Troopers said the occupants of both vehicles were pinned in the wreckage and had to be rescued by the Wagoner and Coweta Fire Departments using the 'Jaws of Life' tool. 

The OHP report stated troopers don't know yet why the driver of the car was headed the wrong way and struck the van.
