One Woman's Push To Get Teens Involved In Tulsa's Race For The Cure

Participants of all ages will be at this year's Race for the Cure in Tulsa. Some survivors are in their eighties while some volunteers are much younger. 

This year, there's a big push to get teenagers involved. I talked with a woman who is leading the high school challenge for this year's Komen Race for the Cure. 

Staci Holmes was looking for a way to help a charity that she believed in so after a family member was diagnosed with breast cancer she found her cause.

"Our family has rallied and been really supportive and everything's gone great with treatment. So it rocks you're world a little bit but then you rise up and you kind of feel stronger.," said Staci Holmes. 

Staci has spent the last several months at her computer, leading the charge this year for the High School Challenge at the Komen Race for the Cure. 

"I've had a great response. It's fantastic. It's a little sad because it seem like everyone is touched in some way by breast cancer whether it be family, friends, acquaintances. It's sad because I'll call a school and they'll say so and so's mom or so and so has been battling it and so the response has been great," said Staci Holmes. 

You may have seen young people volunteering along the race route. This year, Staci plans to increase participation. 

"We've got Bartlesville and Claremore and Collnsville, Oologah Owasso, Tahlequah,Webster, Miami," said Staci Holmes. 

Schools will compete in a number of areas including most participants, most money raised and best school spirit. 

She's hopeful more schools will want to be a part of race day. For Staci Holmes, she's passionate for the cause and hopes others will get involved. 

"You think about how much it impacts your family and your family's friends and if you can just help anybody get through this, its just means the world to me to be able to participate in that," said Staci Holmes.
