Tulsa Police Investigate After Man Fatally Shot Through Bedroom Wall

Tulsa Police have confirmed a man shot in the chest early Tuesday has died. The shooting took place in the 6300 block of North Elwood at about 2:40 a.m. 

Homicide detective Sgt. Dave Walker said the 44-year-old victim was hit by a bullet as he was getting out of bed. He says the bullet was fired from across the street and went through two walls before striking the victim in the chest. 

"It's kind of a sad event, and I think it just goes to show that no crime is minor," Walker said. "This is a burglary from a vehicle that turned into a murder in the time that it takes to pull the trigger."

Officers also found another bullet which had gone through a two-year-old child's playpen in the front room. They say the child was not in the play pen at the time. 

Police said the incident began when a man and his wife started yelling at people who were breaking into their Honda car parked in the street. They said one of the burglars pulled out a rifle and fired multiple rounds at the couple who were standing on their front porch. The couple wasn't hit, but one of the bullets hit the wife's brother who was in a back bedroom.

"He probably rose to his feet, as he reached the full upright position, like I said it was just a horrible instance of bad luck," said Tulsa Police Cpl. Mark Shelton. 

EMSA took the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m.

Police say they do not have a good description of the men who fired the shots.
