A head-on collision in Atoka County claimed the life of a wrong-way driver early Friday morning, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says.

According to an OHP report, the victim’s truck went up in flames and the state medical examiner will have to make a positive identification.

The driver who died was northbound in a southbound lane on U.S. Highway 169 north of Stringtown about 3:30 a.m. and struck a semi head on. The Dodge pickup overturned one-half times and burned, OHP said.

Jeffrey Allen Sheffield, 52, of Polk City, Florida, was driving the 2015 Kenworth tractor and trailer. He was transported to a McAlester hospital and treated and released, the report says.

Sheffield’s passenger, Timothy Wayne Sheffield, 53, of Auburndale, Fla., was also treated and released.

The investigating trooper said it is unknown if the deceased driver was wearing a seat belt. Both men in the semi were wearing proper restraints, according to the report.
