Hundreds of area kids are really focusing on reading this summer. Since they didn’t pass the state's third grade reading test they can't move on to fourth grade until they do pass it.

That’s why 550 Tulsa Public School students are spending their summer in the classroom getting extra help before taking the test again.

“Reading for our 3rd grade kids is as important as any initiative that we have. While I have been visiting some schools this summer, my visit this morning is very deliberate about going to our summer reading academy,” Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent, Keith Ballard said.

The students can take the reading test again later this month and again in August to see if they pass and will go to go on to fourth grade when school starts.
