The owner of a Tulsa martial arts studio wants to give women the skills they need to protect themselves.

With a growing number of sexual assault victims this month, G3 Martial Arts owner Trey Simpson decided to have a free women's self-defense seminar. The interest was so great, he has another class planned for July.

"Unfortunately, that's the world we live in," Simpson said Sunday.

Thirty-five women and children attended the classes at the studio in Fontana Shopping Center. Participants say they didn't want to talk on camera because they are afraid of being targeted by the man police say is preying upon single women in their 50s and 60s.

Simpson said he hopes the self-defense classes give the women confidence by learning effective ways to hopefully escape being a victim.

"They need simple, memorable moves that they can call on in an instant to protect themselves," he said.

The next class is planned for noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20. See the G3 Martial Arts Facebook page for more.
