The Tulsa Fire Department rescued three men stranded on a sand bar in the middle of the Arkansas River early Monday.

Firefighters say the three men were fishing off the sand bar near the pedestrian bridge in the 2900 block of South Riverside Drive Sunday afternoon and when the water began to rise at about 12:45 a.m. Monday they were unable to return to shore.

Tulsa Fire Captain Jarrod Perry says one of the men's wives became concerned, found them on the sand bar and called 911.

Firefighters used a rescue boat to get the three men off the sand bar and back to shore.

"With all the rain that we have been getting lately, I mean the river does have a significant amount of water in it so it's definitely not safe to be out in the middle of the river," said Tulsa Fire Captain Jarrod Perry.

Perry says the three men were not injured.
