A group of Tulsa Girl Scouts are in Washington, D.C. for the White House Science Fair. They are demonstrating their design for a bridge that retracts automatically during floods.<br />

Tulsa Girl Scouts Take Part In White House Science Fair

Dozens of bright young students were in the nation's capitol Tuesday taking part in the White House Science Fair. More than 30 student teams were there this year, including two teams from Oklahoma.

Students from Edmond and Tulsa participated, including some from a Tulsa Girl Scout troop.

Tulsa Girl Scout Troop 2612 includes a group of elementary students who designed a flood-proof bridge. They say they were inspired to create the bridge after last summer's floods in Estes Park, Colorado.

The troop noticed that first responders weren't able to reach some communities because bridges had been washed out. Their bridge design offers a solution to this problem by making a bridge that automatically retracts when flood conditions are detected by a motion sensor.

We were there on Sunday as five of the girls left Tulsa to head to Washington D.C.

Avery Dodson, 6; Natalie Hurley, 8; Miriam Schaffer, 8; Claire Winton, 8; and Lucy Clare Sharp, 8, took part in the Leg League's Disaster Blaster Challenge to show how machines can help solve problems.
