The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting Independence police after the discovery of human remains on the east side of their community Monday morning.
Independence Police Chief Harry Smith said he got a call from the city's sewer department about "what was believed to be human remains" found in a sewer line. He says a crew investigating a sewer line problem made the discovery.
Smith said the remains were that of an adult and they were sent to state medical examiner's office in Kansas City, Kansas. He says no cause of death has been determined and the remains have not been identified.
Smith said they have a missing person's report from December 2013, but doesn't know if these remains are connected to that case.
