Sand Springs says it's one of the first cities in Green Country to install a new type of traffic signal.

The new signal is located at the Highway 97 and Alexander Boulevard intersection.

Officials said the goal of the new left turn signal is to prevent wrecks involving left-hand turns.  They say extensive research and testing shows this type of turn signal reduces collisions.

Here's how the new signal works:

  • Steady RED arrow means left turn drivers must STOP.
  • Steady YELLOW arrow means left turn drivers must prepare to STOP or complete their turn if within the intersection.
  • Flashing YELLOW arrow means left turn drivers may proceed after yielding to pedestrians and oncoming traffic (permissive left turn).
  • Steady GREEN arrow means left turn drivers have the right of way and oncoming traffic must STOP (protected left turn).

Sand Springs officials say an educational sign will be posted adjacent to the left turn signal indicating "LEFT TURN YIELD ON FLASHING YELLOW ARROW."

The city says Norman and Oklahoma City are also using the new type of signal. Some NewsOn6.com users say Sapulpa is, too.
