Weather Experts Warn Of The Dangers Of Driving In Severe Weather

Deadly tornadoes this week remind us of the dangers of driving during severe weather. The one fatality in Quapaw was a man killed when a wall collapsed on his car. In Mississippi, two people died driving through a storm.

Weather experts say the best thing to do is get out of your car and get down as low to the ground as possible.

John Brown died in Quapaw Sunday night when he tried to find protection from a storm. A wall collapsed onto his car, killing him and injuring his wife.

Meteorologists say one of the worst places to be during a tornado is in your car, and out of touch.

"Make sure that you are getting local information, that you are not listening to music on your system so that you cannot hear local news and local weather conditions," Harold Brooks said.

Brooks, with the Storm Prediction Center, said if you are in the car, get out and take cover.

"If you do get caught in a bad place where the tornado has essentially caught you, what you want to do is try and get out of your car and get to a sturdy structure. Stores, restaurants any place where you can get to a sturdy structure will be much better than being in your vehicle," Brooks said.

Underpasses may seem like a safe place to hide, but Brooks said that's not true because they are above ground.

"You don't want to go under an overpass, those tend not to be as particularly safe, you just have to get as low as you can. If there is a ditch there get there," said Brooks.

Weather experts also say it's best to find safe shelter before the storm rather than trying to get to a shelter when the storm is bearing down on you.
