Senior Pepe Gomez had an outstanding week on the mound for the Golden Eagles and on Tuesday morning as he was named Southland Conference Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Gomez threw two gems last week and earned a pair of victories. On April 8 at No. 26 Oklahoma, the senior tossed five shutout frames in a 2-0 win over the Sooners. Five days later, against Stephen F. Austin, Gomez went seven scoreless innings in a 4-0 triumph over the Lumberjacks.
For the week, the Tucson, Ariz., native threw a conference-best 12 shutout innings, allowing just seven hits and striking out eight. On the year, Gomez is 5-3 with a league-leading 1.40 ERA.
Gomez and the Golden Eagles (19-16, 7-8 SLC) have won five straight games and face Wichita State tonight at 6:30 pm.
