Community Unites For Tulsa Man Shot And Killed By Police

An undercover narcotics sergeant is on administrative leave after he shot and killed a man during a high risk search warrant Tuesday night.

Now, people in the community where the man was killed, are looking for answers, and some planned a candlelight vigil for the man shot and killed by police Tuesday evening.

The attorney for the sergeant on leave said the shooting happened after the suspect refused repeated commands to show officers his hands.

Now, the community is coming together after investigators said Deandre Starks made officers serving a search warrant feel threatened, forcing an undercover officer to shoot him.

Police believed a home on East Young Street had drugs inside and recovered them after a raid. Investigators didn't find a gun inside the home, but said Starks' movements threatened officers.

Tuesday's shooting has members in the neighborhood trying to support a grieving family.

Pastor Paul Dunn, said, "Let us get a reality check, and once we do that we can make some decisions on what we should do in the community. They're talking about a rally, that maybe a good thing. But, let's make sure we're rallying for the right thing."

Tulsa Police identified the undercover officer who shot and killed Starks as Sergeant Mark Wollmershauser. Wollmershauser's attorney said his client repeatedly gave commands to Starks to show his hands and told him if he didn't comply he would be shot.

The officer's attorney also said another suspect was in the same bedroom as Starks, he complied with the commands and was not harmed.

Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley said if an officer feels like his, or anyone else's, life is being threatened, deadly force may be used.

"We're going to investigate it. It's going to be investigated by our unit. It will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office, where the District Attorney's Office will ultimately make that decision," Ashley said.

Court records show Starks received a 5 year suspended sentence for drug possession with intent to sell and pleaded guilty to federal drug and gun charges.

Funeral arrangements for Starks are still being made.
