Prosecutors have charged an Independence, Kansas man with murder in the death of his girlfriend.

Russell Arndt, 41, is being held on a $1 million bond after police found a woman dead inside a home in the 200 block of South 2nd Street early Monday.

Independence Police Chief Harry Smith says officers were sent to the home for a welfare check when they found Rebecca Whittley, 35, dead at 2:30 a.m.

Smith says an investigation led them to Arndt.

Arndt is charged with first-degree murder.

Jail records show Arndt's next court appearance is set for January 21.
