Two horses got loose on Highway 75 in Sperry near East 96th Street North, causing a crash that killed one of the animals Monday evening.
Trooper Jason Weilert, of the highway patrol, said they had received reports of the horses being seen running across the highway.
Around 6:30 p.m., OHP got a call that a four-door BMW headed north hit one of the horses. No one in the car was injured, but the horse was killed.
"The driver of the car was very lucky. They usually do a lot more damage than that, as far as injury. The car was totaled. He was very lucky," Weilert said.
The other horse was corralled near the scene of the crash by authorities. They are now trying to locate the owners of the horses.
