Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a fatality wreck on the Creek Turnpike. A Pontiac Trans Am ran off the roadway at 161st East Avenue just after 1 a.m.

Authorities say a man was westbound on the highway when he may have looked down to read a text message and ran off the roadway to the right. The car went down a steep, grassy slope then hit a rocky culvert.

Troopers initially thought the driver might have fallen asleep behind the wheel of the car, which had Texas plates. The driver was ejected and killed.

Another man, a passenger in the Trans Am, was able to crawl through the shattered rear window.

Authorities at the scene said they understood the driver had looked down after receiving a text shortly before the crash. However, the passenger later called News On 6 to say that he himself looked down after receiving a text and so he did not see what happened.

He said he told police that information but they apparently misunderstood him.

The passenger was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Troopers were unable to locate the driver's cell phone during the night and were to return Saturday morning to continue their investigation.
