Brady Street Is Still Brady Street?

An eleventh-hour compromise preserved the name of Brady Street… sort of.

Brady Street's namesake, Tate Brady, a wealthy businessman who was an incorporator of Tulsa, died in 1925. The street has held his name for decades. However, the name came under fire recently after Brady was said to have ties to the Ku Klux Klan and reportedly was a night watchman during the 1921 Race Riot.

After months of debate and public meetings over the issue, the city council decided on Thursday night that Brady Street will become M.B. Brady Street, after a Civil War photographer with no known ties to Tulsa.

For businesses along Brady Street, Friday was just another day.

But there's far more to Brady Street than just downtown.

It extends west through neighborhoods along U.S. Highway 412, which cuts Brady into pieces.

In places, it's hard to know whether a name on a street sign is an honor or not. Much of Brady is showing signs of neglect.

There are lots of dead ends and lots of dogs who like to bark at reporters.

But even out here, the mail will go to new addresses once the change is final. The house numbers will stay the same, just the full name of the street and all the signs will change.

Brady Street picks up again at Gilcrease Museum Road.

On the west side of downtown Tulsa, Brady Street stops and starts. There are lots of little sections of it but it goes all the way west to Sand Springs.

That's the end of the line, that's the city limits, from here it will still be Brady Place.

Outside Tulsa, in the County - the name won't change.

Brady Street re-emerges in east Tulsa, at Garnett Road, where Gabriela Torres hadn't heard about the new name.

Reporter: They've changed it to Brady Street.

Torres: They changed the name? To Brady?

Reporter: Yes.

Torres: So is it Brady street still?

Reporter: Sort of.

Taking the honor of a street name from Tate Brady in favor of photographer Mathew Brady has left more than a few people confused.

"It seems kind of silly in a way, going from one Brady to another," Ice cream truck driver Bill Sturgell said.
