The Tulsa Drillers held off a furious ninth inning rally to defeat the Midland RockHounds, 5-4 Wednesday night.
The Drillers held a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, but the RockHounds loaded the bases before getting one run on an RBI groundout and another on a wild pitch from Tulsa closer Cole White. However, White coaxed a popout from Josh Whitaker to end the Midland threat with runners on first and second.
Christian Bergman picked up the win for Tulsa, while White picked up his 16th save of the season. Pedro Vidal was saddled with the loss for Midland.
Tulsa jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double from Jaron Shepherd. The RockHounds jumped back on top on a solo homer from Conner Crumbliss in the bottom of the third and a sacrifice fly from Vinnie Catricala in the bottom of the fourth.
The Drillers rallied in the top of the sixth, getting a bases loaded walk to tie the score at two, before Dustin Garneau's three-run home run in the top of the seventh gave Tulsa a 5-2 lead.
The two teams are back in action Thursday night at 7 p.m. with the series on the line.
