Tahlequah police are interviewing a female juvenile in connection to a hit-and-run wreck that killed a boy early Sunday morning.
They released a statement Sunday evening saying the girl came to police voluntarily with her legal guardians. She submitted a statement to officers and granted full access to her vehicle, police said.
Chief of Police Nate King said two young men were struck by an unknown vehicle at 4:10 a.m. along the State Highway 51 bypass between Stickross Mountain Road and West Fourth Street.
One of the boys died an hour later.
The other is being treated for non-life threatening injuries and is said to be stable at a hospital.
Police initially said they thought the boys were walking along the road when they were hit. Now they believe the boys were walking home from a nearby Walmart and stopped to rest. They were either kneeling or lying in the roadway when they were struck by a vehicle, King said in the statement.
King did not release the names of the two victims, and the girl's name is not being released due to her age.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of both young men who were involved in this tragedy," King said.
