Tuesday classes have been canceled at the TCC Metro Campus after a basement fire Monday night. School officials say the fire did more damage than originally thought.

The damage isn't visible from outside the downtown campus because it started in the basement when a transformer blew in the electrical vault.

TCC still has to assess the damage and how long repairs will take.

Fortunately, the vault did its job to contain the fire, and the sprinklers were limited to that area too. Since the main building is without power and vulnerable, there have been staff members on duty all night and IT teams are moving servers.

We spoke with campus police about the moment they found out something was wrong.

"Alarms went off. My officers and I checked the building, and my officers and I found smoke coming from the utility closet," said Jim Lambert of TCC Campus Police.

"Students were evacuated, and no one was hurt."

The big unveiling of the Kaiser Foundation's plans for A Gathering Place for Tulsa will still take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the TCC Center for Creativity Event Hall, 910 South Boston Avenue.

That building was not affected by the fire.
