Oklahomans are asking how they can help those impacted by the Moore tornado. The most effective way to help is to give money to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

To donate to the Red Cross, visit www.redcross.org or call 1 800 REDCROSS. You can also text TORNADO to 32333 to give $10.

The Salvation Army in Tulsa is collecting toiletries, hydration items and snacks to help people in Moore.

You can bring the following items to their headquarters parking lot at 924 South Hudson until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

  • Bottled water
  • Gatorade
  • Wet wipes
  • Individually wrapped snacks
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Work gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Heavy duty trash bags
  • Personal sanitation items, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant

You can also text STORM to 80888 to donate $10 to the Salvation Army.

The state of Oklahoma has also set up a page for donations. Visit it here.

Emergency responders say they understand people's desire to donate material items, such as clothing or blankets, but they say those donations can actually do more harm than good, because they require a huge effort to collect and distribute them.

The single most effective way to help is to donate money.
