Rogers County Officials Try To Locate Owner Of PC Found Along Roadway

A Rogers County Sheriff's deputy found a computer containing a lot of personal information.

The computer was left on the side of the road near 76th Street North and 193rd East Avenue.

"It's truly amazing when you get out and look in the weeds a little bit, what you might find," Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton said.

Walton calls this a unique case.

A computer tower was abandoned on the side of the road.

"A desktop [computer] doesn't get up and walk around," Information Technology Specialist Nathan Parks said. "It's not hidden in a ditch somewhere."

With just an hour of observation, Parks was able to bypass the Windows login to find out what information was on the computer.

"There are so many programs out there today that you can literally bypass all that information and turn passwords off or not even need a password, go directly into the files and data itself," Parks said.

Once inside, he found a slew of personal information, like billing reports with bank routing numbers, financial reports and credit card forms.

Parks believes it belongs to someone in the telecommunications business.

"It is from a business network," he said. "I wasn't able to identify what network it is, but I could tell it was set up for a corporate network."

With such important information just sitting on the side of the road, the sheriff's office is more determined to figure out who owns the computer.

"We all live with that fear of identity theft," Walton said. "There's a lot of information in here that people would not want out."

The sheriff's office said the computer doesn't match any police reports for stolen property.

The office plans to talk with Dell and hopefully the company will be able to link it with the owner.

"I think we're pretty good at reuniting stolen property back with its victim a lot of times, but this is just a little bit more of a challenge," Walton said.
